When talking about Spaghetti Westerns, Sergio Leone’s name always comes up, but the director who took the genre to its most extreme and revolutionary limits was Sergio Corbucci. With a raw, violent style, full of broken antiheroes and scorching landscapes, Corbucci helped turn Almería —and especially sets such as Fort Bravo— into a global benchmark for WESTERN FILMS IN ALMERÍA.

The author of classics such as Django, The Great Silence, Let’s Kill, Comrades and The Ruthless, Corbucci forged an unmistakable style: dirty duels, black humour, stylised violence and a world where heroes are practically non-existent.

While Leone opted for visual elegance, Corbucci created a brutal West, full of tormented antiheroes. His locations in Almería — including areas also used in Fort Bravo — reinforced that arid and desperate aesthetic.

Corbucci promoted the trend of shooting more daring scenes: dusty chases, point-blank shootings and improvised duels. His visual influence was noticeable in later productions filmed at Fort Bravo by directors seeking that ‘dirty and real’ style.

Although part of his filming took place in Italy, Corbucci made extensive use of the Tabernas desert landscapes, which shared the area with the Fort Bravo sets. His international success attracted more production companies to film in the region, reinforcing the importance of CINE DEL OESTE ALMERIA.

Many stars from Corbucci’s universe — such as Franco Nero, Tomas Milian and Jack Palance — went on to work in productions filmed at Fort Bravo. This created a “creative bridge” between two worlds: Leone’s elegant westerns and Corbucci’s brutal westerns.

And much of that reputation is due to his time in Almería, where he found the perfect aesthetic for his stories of revenge, tragic heroes and surprising endings.

His mark lives on at Fort Bravo, where many visitors feel the mix between Leone’s classic western and Corbucci’s savage rawness.
Both directors made Almería a mythical territory for world cinema.
